At what point do you engage an architecture firm in a new project?

  1. Right away – I need their name to help me get a partner on board and financing in place.
  2. When I know what my budget is and what I want to achieve with the project.
  3. When the project is ready to go, I know what I want, and I need someone to design it.

What role do you expect an architecture firm to play in the development of a new project?

  1. I expect them to drive the project creatively.
  2. I want them to be my partner and work with the rest of the design and construction team.
  3. I expect them to bring my vision to life.

What is your priority in selecting an architecture firm?

  1. They should be well-known.
  2. They should have done similar projects and understand their role in making it successful.
  3. They should support me and my team in what we get done without needing too many resources.

What has been your biggest headache when it comes to working with architecture firms in the past?

  1. They have been pushed around by everyone else on my team and the project concluded with no one being happy with the result.
  2. They have insisted that the project is more important for their design portfolio than my business portfolio.
  3. They have not been open to making changes that my financial team insists are important.

Which project do you admire most?

  1. The Guggenheim Museum – it’s just beautiful.
  2. The Bellagio – it reinvigorated Las Vegas
  3. Ford River Rouge Complex – it stood the test of time

If you selected mostly A’s, you should work with a Starchitect. Starchitects are typically celebrity architects with well-known or household names. They have a signature design aesthetic. Working with Starchitects can mean that the design is the only thing that matters. Starchitects typically come with a high price tag.

If you selected mostly B’s, you should work with a Team Player. These architects typically have a wide variety of projects in their portfolios, work well with others, and design strategically to achieve business goals. They have no particular design aesthetic, do not have the clout of Starchitects, but usually provide value to the client.

If you selected mostly C’s, you should work with an Order Taker. Order Taker architects provide competency without price. They do what they’re told and do it well. These architects can have a signature design style that is found in all their buildings though it is not generally acclaimed.
